Analytic Treatment of Positronium Spin Splittings in Light-Front QED

چکیده
We study the QED bound-state problem in a light-front hamiltonian approach. Starting with a bare cutoff QED Hamiltonian, H B , with matrix elements between free states of drastically different energies removed, we perform a similarity transformation that removes the matrix elements between free states with energy differences between the bare cutoff, Λ, and effective cutoff, λ (λ < Λ). This generates effective interactions in the renormalized Hamiltonian, H R . These effective interactions are derived to order α in this work, with α ≪ 1. H R is renormalized by requiring it to satisfy coupling coherence. A nonrelativistic limit of the theory is taken, and the resulting Hamiltonian is studied using bound-state perturbation theory (BSPT). The effective cutoff, λ, is fixed, and the limit, 0 ←− mα ≪ λ ≪ mα −→ ∞, is taken. This upper bound on λ places the effects of low-energy (energy transfer below λ) emission in the effective interactions in the |ee〉 sector. This lower bound on λ insures that the nonperturbative scale of interest is not removed by the similarity transformation. As an explicit example of the general formalism introduced, we show that the Hamiltonian renormalized to O(α) reproduces the exact spectrum of spin splittings, with degeneracies dictated by rotational symmetry, for the ground state through O(α4). The entire calculation is performed analytically, and gives the well known singlet-triplet ground state spin splitting of positronium, 7 6α Ryd. We discuss remaining corrections other than the spin splittings and how they can be treated in calculating the spectrum with higher precision.

Flow equations in the light-front perturbation theory
The method of flow equations is applied to QED in the light-front dynamics. To second order in the coupling the particle number conserving part of the effective QED Hamiltonian has two terms of different structure. The first term gives the Coulomb interaction and the correct spin splittings of positronium; the contribution of the second term to mass spectrum depends on the explicit form of unit...
متن کاملSinglet-Triplet Splitting of Positronium in Light-Front QED
We study the QED bound-state problem in a light-front hamiltonian approach. It is important to establish the equivalence (or not) of equal-time and light-front approaches in the well-understood arena of Quantum Electrodynamics. Along these lines, the singlettriplet ground state spin splitting in positronium is calculated. The well-known result, 7 6 αRyd, is obtained analytically, which establis...
متن کاملLight-front Hamiltonian Approach to the Bound-state Problem in Quantum Electrodynamics
This dissertation presents the first theoretical investigation of the Lamb shift in a light-front hamiltonian approach: the dominant part of the splitting between the 2S 1 2 and 2P 1 2 energy levels in hydrogen is calculated. Also presented for the first time is an analytic calculation in a light-front hamiltonian approach of the singlet-triplet spin splitting in the ground state of positronium...
متن کاملNote on restoring manifest rotational symmetry in hyperfine and fine structure in light-front QED.
We study the part of the renormalized, cutoff QED light-front Hamiltonian that does not change particle number. The Hamiltonian contains interactions that must be treated in second-order bound state perturbation theory to obtain hyperfine structure. We show that a simple unitary transformation leads directly to the familiar Breit-Fermi spin-spin and tensor interactions, which can be treated in ...

The method of flow equations is applied to QED on the light front. Requiring that the particle number conserving terms in the Hamiltonian are considered to be diagonal and the other terms off-diagonal an effective Hamiltonian is obtained which reduces the positronium problem to a two-particle problem, since the particle number violating contributions are eliminated. Using an effective electron-...
